Per reports from El Chiringuito TV, FC Barcelona has formally initiated talks with Atletico Madrid regarding a move for Argentine forward Julian Alvarez. The Catalan giants are treating the World Cup winner as their top priority to fill the void left by Robert Lewandowski, whose impending departure has pushed the club to fast-track their striker search.
A Strong Push for Alvarez
The situation has grown increasingly complex on both sporting and financial fronts, yet there are clear signs that Alvarez himself is warming to the idea of a Camp Nou switch. The Argentine has reportedly turned down a fresh contract extension from Atletico, signalling his desire to join a club with bigger ambitions.
Barcelona’s pursuit has gathered momentum as club officials regard Alvarez as one of the rare few attackers who can command their frontline in the seasons ahead. Both parties, however, currently appear to be waiting on the other to take the decisive step — Alvarez wants Barcelona to demonstrate the financial muscle to pull off the deal, while Barcelona wants a firmer commitment from the player before escalating negotiations.
Atletico Madrid, for their part, have no intention of letting their star man go cheaply and are holding firm on a valuation exceeding €150 million.
Barcelona has explored alternatives
In an attempt to bring down the overall fee, Barcelona explored a player-plus-cash arrangement that would have seen Ferran Torres head to the Spanish capital. That plan has since fallen apart after Ferran made his intentions clear — he has no desire to leave Barcelona this summer.
With direct talks now reportedly underway between the two clubs, the exact figure at which Atletico would sanction Alvarez’s departure is yet to be established.
